The anticipation is mounting! In eleven days, on October 28 at 3:00 pm to be exact, Austria’s American football year will experience its absolute climax – with its new premium partner win2day, Austrian Lotteries' online gaming service.

It’s the highlight of Austria’s American football year. The European Championship final between Austria and Finland will take place on October 28. At the same time, it’s the perfect occasion to launch an Austria-wide campaign for young women in American football together with win2day. win2day is the main sponsor of the 2023 IFAF European Championship final between Austria and Finland, which will take place at the NV Arena in St. Pölten and for which well over 4,000 tickets have already been sold.

European Championship final in Austria for the second time

Austria’s American football team has already come very close to winning the European Championship title twice: at their home European Championship match in 2014, they were narrowly beaten by Germany in the final round in front of more than 27,000 spectators at the Ernst Happel Stadium, and in 2018 they lost to France in Vantaa, Finland. There were also two bronze medals from the 1995 European Championships and the 2010 European Championships.

In their home country, of all places, Austria’s national team under the leadership of Head Coach Max Sommer now has a chance to win their historic first European Championship title. On the way to the final, the home team defeated Hungary and France as well as the reigning European champions Italy in the Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck at the beginning of August.

win2day and AFBÖ are looking for players for the 2026 national team

The AFC Vienna Vikings Ladies and the SG Telfs Patriots/Schwaz Hammers Ladies will demonstrate just how exciting, attractive and varied women’s American football can be in an exhibition match at the NV Arena shortly before the start of the game. This exhibition is considered the kick-off for an upcoming Austria-wide women’s try-out, which all American football clubs in Austria can join.

Ladies’ American football is currently played in Austria in the 7-vs-7 variant – with the clear aim of upgrading to the classic 11-vs-11 variant in the future and thus also being able to form a women’s national team again. The goal of the AFBÖ and main sponsor win2day is for Austria to be able to field a women’s national American football team at an internationally high level in the next three years.

Georg Wawer, win2day’s Managing Director:

“At win2day, we’re particularly proud that women’s American football is also in the spotlight as part of the European Championship final. Our principle is to always support women’s, men’s and disabled sports with the same level of appreciation. Apart from the great sport of American football and the great achievements of our domestic American footballers, the upcoming women’s try-outs and the sustainable development of women’s football in Austria are a main reason why we are committed to this sport for the first time, and with our full enthusiasm.”

AFBÖ Secretary General Christoph Seyrl:

“We’re delighted to have found a strong partner in win2day for the final of the European Football Championship, but we’re even more pleased that, with the support of win2day, we can give the next important impulse to the “Restart of the Women’s Tackle Football League” project, which has been running for a year now.”
