After three strokes of bad luck, a lucky six in the "6 out of 45" lotto

You're more likely to be struck by lightning than to win the lottery. We often hear this comparison being used (jokingly) to symbolise the probability of picking the correct six numbers in the lottery. But how likely is it to both be struck by lightning AND win the lottery? A woman from neighbouring Bavaria with roots in Austria can only smile as she can provide a first-hand account of this happening.

Now around 60 years old, she visits her mother in Tyrol several times a month, and she not only maintains close family ties in Austria but also keeps a close connection when it comes to gaming. She regularly takes part in the "6 out of 45" lotto, and on Sunday, December 26, she was the only participant who picked the six correct numbers in the "6 out of 45" lotto and won exactly 1 million euros.

For her, this event only served to balance out the previous bad luck she had endured: "About ten years ago our house was struck by lightning... for the first time," the technical employee told us. "It struck again about two years ago. Both times, thank God nobody got hurt, but there was a lot of property damage."
But it didn't end there: "In the mid-1980s, my husband had a car accident with a driver heading the wrong way, and he was incredibly lucky to have survived that. Because of everything that's happened, I've been thinking for a while that it's about time we won the lottery."

Her wish came true on St. Stephen's Day last year, and she plans to spend the million euros on her leisure-time activities. She wants to buy the insurance periods that would allow her to retire early and enjoy life to the fullest. "My husband and I just love Austria. We will now visit all those wonderful places there that we haven't seen yet," the new millionaire is happy to report. And she aims to continue playing the lottery: "Anyone who's struck by lightning twice can also win the lottery twice."
